"A consummate choral group which attains a high level of thoughtful and significant vocal music performance"
Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass
The original name for Haydn's mass was Missa in Angustiis (Mass for troubled times). At the time of writing, Austria was on the brink of being taken over by the forces of Napoleon. It was indeed a troubling time for Haydn and his fellow countrymen. However, the month before the debut of the Mass, Admiral Horatio Nelson would rout Napoleon at the Battle of the Nile. The Mass would take on his name in honor of his achievement. Hadyn's work takes the ageless text of the mass and sets it to music that explores themes of turmoil and confusion. Please join Choral Arts of Chattanooga as they present the Lord Nelson Mass and Mozart's "Ave verum" and "Laudate Dominum" from Vesperae Solennes De Confessore, K. 339.
